Homemade Burgers (Better than your Local Burger Joint!)

Okay, I’m never ordering a burger again! (Well unless I’m hungover and lazy).

These homemade burgers are tastier and probably healthier than your local burger place, and they don’t take too much work. Make sure you get some good quality mince, not too fatty but not extra lean either as the burger will end up dry.

The following recipe will make 3 large burgers:

Ingredients:

  • 400g beef mince (medium fattyness)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (about 2 slices of bread, whizzed in a blender)
  • 1/2 an egg, whisked
  • 1/3 of an onion, finely chopped
  • A spash of Worcester sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 bread buns of your choice (I used sesame buns, but brioche would also be great!)
  • Fillings of your choice (i.e. tomato, lettuce, red onion, avocado, fried egg, cheese plus condiments)

Method:

  1. Combine the first five ingredients in a bowl and form burgers.
  2. Fry in the olive oil for approx five min each side on a medium/low heat.
  3. Meanwhile, toast your buns.
  4. Place cooked burgers between a toasted bun and add desired fillings!

On a Mission for Meat

My friend and I went to MeatMission last night to get some greasy burgers. Sometimes (just sometimes) you want a meal that is really really bad for your health, and this place satisfies that craving.

The burgers, and buns, are fried in BUTTER, giving them that authentic American burger taste, and look. I got the standard cheeseburger, which comes with American (processed) cheese, pickles, red onions, lettuce, mustard and ketchup (and there is also mayo on the table if you want to add). The default cooking level is medium rare, but I asked for mine medium and it actually came medium (sometimes places ignore what you ask for in this respect). Although it’s quite small (which is probably a good thing for your arteries) it’s still good value at just £6.75.

They don’t do chips (fine by me) just fries (£3), and they’re pretty perfect (probably the best fries I’ve ever had) and you get a very generous portion.

I also spied a peanut butter sundae on the dessert menu, which is my favourite flavour, but I managed to resist and honestly the smallish burger and half the portion of fries satisfied me.

There’s a small cocktail bar in the middle of the restaurant serving some of the best cocktails I’ve had in London. Creative, fresh and tasty. I would particularly recommend the St. Lawrence which is whiskey, maple syrup, fresh lemon juice and bitters with an orange twist. Similar ingredients to an Old Fashioned but it’s served long. Very yummy.

You can book or walk in, get there before 7pm if you are walking in as after that the wait can be very long.

The rest of the menu looked awesome so I will definitely be back to sample more!
